First aid Level 1
The course equips learners with the basic principles of assessing an emergency situation, contacting the emergency services as quickly as possible and while awaiting their arrival, candidates will be able to perform basic skills required to sustain life.
Learners will be able to:
- understand the laws of first aid, including the principles of emergency care
- demonstrate an understanding of emergency scene management
- treat wounds and arrest bleeding
- know the first aid required for different injuries
- utilise the correct equipment and safety precautions when administering first aid
- understanding potential hazards in the work environment
- performing cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
First aid Level 2
The course will enable learners to provide primary emergency care (first aid) in response to an occupational risk induced or any health emergency in their specific workplaces.
Upon completion of the course, the successful learner will be able to:
- demonstrate the principles of primary emergency care
- assess and control a single injury emergency scene in the workplace
- demonstrate primary emergency life support for adults, children and infants
- explain and manage shock
- carry out secondary assessment of the sick or injured person and provide appropriate primary emergency care at the scene
- keep records of the incident/accident.
First aid Level 3
Candidates will be taught how to treat the multi trauma patient scenarios both in theory and practically.
Skin injuries
We go over workplace materials that are hazardous to the skin, like irritants causing dermatitis, allergic reactions, and cancer which can be caused by cleaning products, oils, paints, cement etc.
Emergency childbirth
In this chapter candidates will be taught how to deliver babies during normal childbirth on a birth simulation manikin. The health of the mother and the infant is extremely important and if the incorrect techniques are followed it could be dangerous and even result in the loss of both their lives.
Behavioural emergencies
Behavioural / psychiatric emergencies are when someone’s behaviour is so out of control that they can cause harm to themselves or to others. Candidates need to be able to be able to treat these patients compassionately before they become a danger to anyone.
Health and safety Representatives
The role of health and safety representatives is central to the overall safety and well-being of any organisation. Without active and effective health and safety representatives, an organisation’s safety measures and overall culture will lack structure, support and buy-in.
Persons credited with this unit standard will be able to:
- Describe the framework of workplace health and safety legislation pertaining to health and safety representatives.
- Explain the specified requirements to conduct safety, health and environmental representation activities at a working place.
- Address safety, health and environment-related issues within their scope of authority.
